In every corner of the Internet, there’s a Make Money Online article.

You can really make money on the Internet. After a time, you can even depend on the Internet as your monthly source of income.

Many Filipinos are already making a living on the Internet, and I’m happy to say I’m one of them.

As soon as I reach my earning goal on the Internet, I plan to resign from my day job and focus on increasing my Internet endeavors. Currently, I’m earning between $250 to $300 from the Internet every month — not yet enough for my family, so I haven’t resigned from my day job.

At the start, you’ll only earn cents, but later on, you’ll find that these cents add up.

As you become smarter, and as you increase your money-making gigs, you’ll see the dollars coming in.

Here are ways to make money online, and I classified them as:

Easy — Some money

More Effort Needed — More money

Much More Effort Needed — Much more money

I’ll try to shorten and simplify my explanations so you won’t get overwhelmed, and so you can start immediately. I’ll write about specific strategies in my later posts.

EASY WAYS:

1. Join Paid-to-Click (PTC) sites. (Warning: As of May 2011, I’m no longer recommending PTCs. More and more PTCs are not paying. Three sites, where my daughter conscientiously clicked, even those recommended by sulit.com.ph clickers, are no longer paying.) Just please go to No. 2.

You just sign up, and view a number of ads at certain times of the day. But beware, there are a lot of scam sites. Some new sites really pay, but oftentimes they shut down without paying when they lose money. Those that pay very little are the ones that survive.

If interested, you can find nerbie on sulit.com.ph and ask what the legitimate sites are. I
referred nerbie instead of the others on sulit because I find him very helpful to new bloggers. He’s earning about $1,000 a month from blogging, but he also participates in PTCs.

My young daughter also does PTCs, so if interested, you can comment below and my daughter will give you the PTCs she’s doing.

2. Answer questions on MyLot.

Choose questions you like to answer. The longer and more relevant your answer, the better.
Sign-up for a MyLot account.

MORE EFFORT NEEDED:

3. Answer questions on WebAnswers.

Choose questions to answer. You’ll earn thru Google Adsense. If you don’t have an Adsense account yet, WebAnswers will help you get an account after getting 10 awarded answers.
Sign-up for a WebAnswers account.

4. Start a blog on Blogger and earn from Google Adsense.

Blogger is a free blogging platform, and it’s the best of the many free blogging sites on the Internet because it’s owned by Google.

Just go to Blogger.com, and create a blog. Just follow the instructions. Don’t worry about making a mistake. Every mistake can be corrected easily. You’ll learn.

What is a blog? A blog is just like a diary, a newsletter, a magazine, or a newspaper where you write something that your readers can read.

It can be about anything, but of course, it helps if you write things that are interesting to many people. And Google bans topics such as pornography, graphic sex, gambling, prescription drugs, malware, promotion of crimes, etc.

Think of topics that people are searching. Best resorts in the Philippines? Best investments? Makeup? Clothes? Gardening? Pets?

Choose topics:

that you know

that you enjoy writing about

that other people are interested in

that other people are researching on the Internet

As you blog and learn, you’ll come to know about keywords, keyword search, SEO, etc.

But the more important thing is you start now.

After you have written about 20 articles, and you have attracted some readers, apply for a Google Adsense account. If your application is approved, you can earn from clicks of Google ads on your blog.

Be warned that only legitimate clicks are paid, and you will be banned from Google forever if you click your own ads, or if your friends/family click on your ads. Google will know; it has sophisticated software to track online activities.

You can also earn from Amazon. I’ll write about Amazon soon. Meanwhile, build up your Blogger blog or site. Sign up for a Blogger account.

MUCH MORE EFFORT NEEDED:

5. Write for free revenue sharing sites.

You write articles for these sites, and then share Adsense revenues. Some also allow Amazon links. You get an income share of from 50% to 100%.

There are many of these sites, so since our time is limited, choose the best.
I recommend these sites:

EXCERPTZ — This is fairly new but the advantage is your articles get noticed immediately. You get 80 percent of Adsense revenues. You can also link to Amazon directly.

BEST-REVIEWER — It’s easier to create posts on this site compared to others. Why? There’s already a format. It’s like filling in the blanks. There’s a format for Top, something like Top 3 Best-selling Movies of all Time, or Top 5, or Top 10. The other format is How much money does ___ earn? Just write any person or occupation. Of course, choose those that are interesting and popular — the celebrities.

HUBPAGES — This is the most popular revenue sharing site today. It’s on the list of
Quantcast’s Top 100 Sites and Alexa’s Top 198 Sites.

There are others like xomba, bukisa, snipsly, squidoo, shetoldme, and yousaytoo, but I suggest you focus first on the three above, although you can also explore these four.

6. Create your own website hosted by a web hosting firm that you pay.

Blogger.com is free, why would I pay to create a website or a blog?

Yes, you can earn from Blogger.com. But there are advantages to owning your own site too:

You have more design options.

You’re free to choose the ads that you display on your site.

You can sell your website or your domain name if it becomes successful and popular.

Blogger.com can delete your website if you violate its terms.

You have an easier-to-remember domain name.

On Blogger.com, your domain name is domain name.blogspot.com, something like
happytravel.blogspot.com. If you own your site, your domain name would be happytravel.com.

Today, however, Blogger allows you to buy a domain name to remove ‘blogspot’. Just pay $10 per year.

Of course, you can have Blogger blogs and paid sites at the same time.

workingpinoy.com is hosted by 1and1. But one day, I’ll move to Hostgator, my original choice.

One of the best webhosting firms is Hostgator. Go to forums and you’ll find that many bloggers recommend it as a webhost.

7. Become an affiliate marketer.

This is like being a sales agent of a company. You sell a product and you get a commission. I have tried popular affiliate sites like Clickbank and Commission Junction, but I have not yet been successful on these sites. I have a day job, so I lack time to market products. The products need to be blogged about. In addition, these sites have commission amounts that you need to reach before you can get your money and certain time limits.

My recommendations are Amazon and Clickbank. You can sell Amazon products through your sites, including your Blogger blogs, and revenue sharing sites. Most importantly, Amazon is a trusted brand. It really pays.

Clickbank sells only digital products like ebooks and software, so it doesn’t have delivery problems.

8. Become a freelance writer.

You can find a writing gig on Craigslist Manila. I have written a blogpost on my great
experience getting a freelance writing job on Craigslist. Be warned though that there are a lot of scams on Craigslist.

There are other sites where you can get writing jobs, like Odesk, etc., but I haven’t tried them.

As you surf, you’ll see a lot of ads that say Become an instant millionaire, Earn thousands of dollars Overnight, or Watch your dollars grow as you sit. Take a look to see for yourself. All of them ask lots of US dollars from you first before you make money. Don’t get enticed, or else you’ll be throwing your money to swindlers.

Lastly, if you don’t have yet a Paypal account, get a free Paypal account. Many online enterprises pay through Paypal. If you don’t have a credit card to verify Paypal, visit the Union Bank website and read its advice on Paypal verification.

Google Adsense pays Philippine bloggers thru Western Union.

What’s the difference between a college and a university?

Both terms refer to institutions of higher learning or post-secondary education, but
a university encompasses a larger scope compared to a college. A college typically offers a number of associate or bachelor’s degrees or one- to five-year courses while a university also offers masteral or doctoral degrees, in addition to a larger number of baccalaureate degrees.

A college may also refer to a certain discipline or department, such as college of law or college of liberal arts, which is part of a university. Some colleges, which are not parts of universities, specialize in certain disciplines, such as nursing or engineering, and some of them use the term institute in their names.

Note: Some colleges use the abbreviated word St. instead of Saint in their names.

There are BPI correspondent banks in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the Middle East for OFWS sending money to the Philippines. BPI has partnered with these banks so that you can send money through them.

To send money to your family or any recipient in the Philippines:

1. Go to any of the following banks, and apply for a Wire Transfer.

Wire Transfer is sometimes called telegraphic transfer, bank to bank money transfer, or SWIFT transfer.

2. Fill out the wire transfer form. You will write:

Name of Recipient

Name of Recipient Bank: BPI or BPI Family

Name of Branch and Address of Branch

BPI or BPI Family Account Number

BPI SWIFT Code or Address: BOPIPHMM

*Use the same SWIFT Code for BPI Family.

*SWIFT means Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication.
*SWIFT is the same as BIC – Bank Identifier Code.

BANK CHARGES:

You will pay a Transfer Fee to the Correspondent Bank.

BPI also charges a Service Fee:

-between 150 to 200 pesos for deposit to a peso account
-$6.50 for deposit to a dollar account

The following are the BPI correspondent banks and their SWIFT Codes. You need a correspondent bank’s SWIFT Code if you’re far from a correspondent bank and you make a wire transfer in a non-BPI-correspondent bank. In this case, the transfer of funds would be from the non-correspondent bank to the correspondent bank and then to BPI.

This is because banks now are required by the Central Bank to return unfunded checks not later than 7:30 a.m. the day after a check is deposited. So banks need to clear all checks deposited on the day the checks are deposited.

Depending on the policies of different banks, you may or may not have a chance to fund your check on the day your check is deposited. People with special customer relations with their banks may get phone calls if their funds are insufficient or banks may have a service where funds are automatically transferred from a savings account to a checking account if funds on the checking account are insufficient.

All in all, to make your life simpler and uncomplicated, do not issue a check if it is not funded.

Some readers asked if the BDO Kabayan ATM Debit Card can be used to withdraw money outside the Philippines, so I emailed the BDO Customer e Services and asked. I was pleasantly surprised that the customer officers replied immediately.

According to Ms. R. C. of the eServices unit, the BDO Kabayan ATM Debit Card and any other BDO ATM debit card can be used to withdraw money abroad as long as:

it is active

and it has sufficient balance.

For holders of BDO ATM debit cards with the MasterCard logo, withdraw at the ATM of any foreign bank in other countries with the Cirrus Maestro/PLUS logos.

If your card is a BDO ATM debit VISA card, withdraw at ATMs abroad with the VISA/VISA Plus logos.

These are the transaction fees:

Balance Inquiry - US$ 1.00

Withdrawal - US$ 3.50

For unsuccessful ATM transactions such as wrong PIN,
insufficient funds, exceeds limit, etc., you will be charged US$ 1.00.

Do not, however, depend solely on your BDO ATM debit cards while abroad. They may not work all the time.

This is the free HP printer, scanner and copier (three-in-one) that I received from Smart Bro when I renewed my contract for 24 months more.

I didn’t even made an effort to get it. It was delivered to our house by a Smart Bro agent. This agent was really smart as he went around our neighborhood looking for roofs with the Smart Bro canopy, and asked subscribers if they want a free HP printer, scanner and copier.

Well, there are other choices:

Nokia 1680C cellphone

Smart Plug ‘N Talk

Smart Bro Plug-it

rebate of 160 a month or nearly 4,000 in savings over the 24-month period

Additionally, after 3 years, one has the option to apply for a plan downgrade to 799, apparently with the same features, so this means more savings.

As expected, I chose the HP printer, scanner and copier, since I’d be getting three gadgets, wow! And it has been working very well since its delivery.

Renew now and get one HP printer, scanner and copier too.

This is the only credit card in the Philippines which has no annual fee for life.

Except of course those premium cards for the very wealthy, and those cards whose owners accumulate enough points to get annual-fee waivers.

I’ve related in my other posts that I finally became free from the bondage of credit cards last February 15. I had eight credit cards, and after paying off all the balances, I canceled all of them, except my local BPI Classic.

But because I need a credit card for my Internet payments, I had to choose one credit card good for international purchases. I like BDO Shop More, but if I have to cut costs, I should retain one with no maintenance fee.

So I finally chose the M Free Mastercard of Metrobank. After canceling my old Metrobank card, I requested for the no-annual-fee card, and it was given to me.

More than a year ago, I applied for this no-annual-fee Metrobank card, but I was told I need to first use an annual-fee Metrobank card for at least a year before I can qualify for the free annual-fee credit card.

If you need to maintain just one card, consider this no-annual fee credit card.

If you have to get a credit card in the Philippines, and

you cannot pay the total amount due each month

you can only pay the minimum due

and you may have to be late some of the time,

then do not get credit cards that have high late-penalty fees and that are strict on payment dates.

NOT RECOMMENDED:

HSBC — charges 600 pesos for every month that you are late even by just an hour or a day.

If you call them and explain your situation, your 600 may be reversed only once in every 6 months, and that depends on your reasoning and the mood of the bank representative at the time you are calling.

Next month, I’ll be receiving some money (Thank you, Lord!), and this HSBC card will be the first I will pay off fully and say goodbye to forever. Good riddance! Wow, how nice it would be to cut my HSBC card!

I was late in paying after the Ondoy floods, but the HSBC never heard my explanation. No soul! Only business for them.

STANDARD CHARTERED — also charges 600 pesos for every late payment… even by just an hour. Remember, the date changes at midnight? Or maybe the cutoff hour is every 6 am? So, after midnight or after 6 am, and your payment is not there, the 600 pesos is charged, presto!

How do I know? I have both of them.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Fortunately, there are credit cards in the Philippines that have retained some bits of kindness,
and I’m glad that the local banks (although they have foreign shareholders) are the leaders.

Aside from forgiving late payments, they also charge lower fees.

BPI EXPRESS CREDIT has been very kind to me in terms of late payments. As long as my payment-due doesn’t remain unpaid until the next statement date, I don’t get charge a late-penalty fee.

Kahit ma-late ako ng 5 days or 10 days! But, of course, I don’t abuse it. I oftentimes pay very early too. An I’ve been using this BPI credit card since March 2000.

And when a late-penalty is deserved — because the next statement date has passed and my due remained unpaid — eto yong times na may mga unexpected major expenses –
the penalty fee was only 6% of the total amount due.

One time I was late in paying 1,715.40 by 13 days (almost 2 weeks!).
And you know what? My late payment was only 102.93! Compare that to HSBC and Standard Chartered which charge cardholders 600 pesos for being late for only an hour or a day!

EASTWEST is also kind. It forgives a few days of delinquency. And the charge is only 200 pesos — when the next statement date has already passed.

BDO SHOP MORE charges 300 pesos or 5% of amount due, whichever is higher.

METROBANK charges 600 pesos or 7.5% of amount due, whichever is higher. This is one local bank that charges high, although this bank offers an annual-fee-free card and a low-interest Cash2Go loan.

Update as of March 2011: Metrobank M Free Mastercard now charges 700 pesos for late payments.

BPI EXPRESS CREDIT charges 6% of the amount due for the month — no fixed fee, no whichever.

This rule considers the poorer ones like me — 6 percent of 1,000 is only 60 pesos, but when a rich credit card holder is late, the 6-percent fee for 100,000 is 6,000 pesos. But, oh well, I’m not a gold cardholder; the late-penalty rules for gold credit cards could be different.

When charged a late penalty fee, call the bank. Give a valid reason. Oftentimes, they forgive, as long as you are not late often.

Updated June 22, 2011

If you’re a parent whose high-school or college-age kid is living in a dorm or studying in another city or an OFW who likes to control your child’s weekly allowance, take advantage of free Internet banking services offered by local banks.

Most large banks now in the Philippines offer free Internet banking, and they offer lots of services that prompts you to say Wow.

However, in this article, I would describe only two, BPI Express Online and My BDO Internet Banking, because they’re the ones I use.

1. If you already have accounts with BPI and/or BDO, then you’ve
done the first step. Your savings account or checking account
would become the wallet from which you would get money to give
to your child weekly.

2. Next is to get an ATM card for your child, or ATM cards if you have more than one child to support.

If you get a regular ATM card, you are required to maintain a balance – 2,000 for a BDO account; 1,000 for a BPI Family account or 3,000 for a BPI account.

For most children, this maintaining balance is a temptation — a cake on the table ready to be consumed.

So the best option is to get a BPI Express Cash Card or a BDO Cash Card. Both of these ATM cards do not require a maintaining balance.

You can get a BDO Cash Card for only 120 pesos or a BPI Express Card for only 120 pesos also. (Update for BPI Express Card: There’s now a 15-pesos fee for ATM withdrawal and a withdrawal amount minimum of 500 pesos.)

If you like to know other cash cards, go to this post: Best Savings Accounts for Students in the Philippines.

For OFWs, a better account is available — BDO Kabayan Savings. It only has a 100-peso maintaining balance, and it has other benefits too. Info on BDO Kabayan savings account.

OFWs can also get a BDO Remit Cash Card.

Other banks also offer accounts for OFW remittances.

3. Then enroll your BPI savings or checking account with BPI Express Online or your BDO account with MyBDO Internet Banking. You enroll online and then print the filled-out form for submission to your BDO or BPI bank branch.

Just prepare your user name and password and be ready with your account number and your BDO or BPI cash card numbers.

4. After your Internet banking account is activated, you can plan and schedule when and how much money to put into your child’s cash card.

If your child needs 200 a day, you can reload your child’s cash card 1,200 or 1,500 every week. Just adjust the amounts when your child needs to pay the dorm or buy something.

Just tell your children that the minimum withdrawal for BPI Express Cash is 500 pesos and for BDO Cash Card, it is 200, (changed to 100 pesos as of March 2011). Tell them to withdraw, if possible, only from these banks’ ATMs to avoid other banks’ ATM fees (about 10 to 12 pesos for each withdrawal).

5. For OFWs, Internet banking can save you remittance costs and at the same time prevent your children from having access to large amounts of money, which can be tempting. One-day millionaires among OFW children are common.

You don’t have to send money every month or every week, so you’ll save on remittance fees. Just remit an adequate amount to your own savings account and then transfer controlled amounts to your kids’ accounts through your Internet banking account as often as you like, as there’s no transfer fee.
